A big storm system is getting wound up this morning over the southern plains with a tornado watch shown. This bulk of this system will pass to our east with only Southeast Iowa picking up some light snow. After this storm, a series of storms is expected to impact Iowa through the weekend with the potiental for heavy snow on Sunday night.

The featured chart is of daily low temperature departures from normal for Des Moines during January. Outside of a few very cold days last week, most of the month was near or well above normal. The caveat is that while temperatures were above normal, they were also below freezing for most of the month. The good news is that the coldest month of the year is now behind us and we can think positive thoughts for a warmer spring to come!

An intense band of snowfall setup Sunday afternoon and dumped upwards of a foot of snow over a small area. The featured map is from Des Moines' Weather Bureau showing the snowfall reports up until Sunday night. Another winter storm is impacting Iowa this Monday with some storms producing lightning and thunder! Looks like a rough few days of winter this week as the large scale weather pattern remains very active.

The same area that got upwards of a foot on Sunday appears to have gotten upwards of another foot from the current storm system! The featured map is of 24 hour snow fall reports this morning showing the heaviest totals just SE of Des Moines. It is still snowing in that area with higher amounts expected further east toward Davenport. More chances of snow are in the forecast for this weekend!

A high pressure center has slide off to the east this morning turning our winds out of the south and thick fog has formed making the morning travel difficult. Iowa was impacted by a major storm system dumping over a foot of snow near Davenport on the 5th and 6th. The southern end of this powerful storm system brought devastating tornados to Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and other states. Wikipedia has an excellent summary of this sad event which ranks as the deadliest outbreak during the modern NEXRAD era. The featured animation shows a composite of maximum NEXRAD reflectivity for the event along with maps of local storm reports. You can see the SW to NE oriented streaks in the composite as the strong supercells track along with the mean upperlevel flow. You can also see how the snowfall reports coincide with the lighter areas of reflectivity.

What makes this winter feel longer than others? There is no one way to prove this statement to be true, but we can sure compare this year to others. The featured chart shows the maximum consecutive days of having sub 50°F temperatures for Ames, which could be one way to quantify winter's apparent length. Most Iowans probably remember the brutal winter of 2000-2001, which was the longest streak. This winter is up to 86 days, which ranks just 26th in the climate history and 30 days longer than the average maximum winter streak. If you have any other ideas to quantify the statement, please let me know!

It is interesting to see the multi-day warming or cooling trends with the sudden drops with cold front passages. Temperatures will rebound nicely on Saturday before the next big storm system on Sunday. This storm will bring near blizzard conditions to primarily the eastern half of the state.

Local Bufkit guru Chris Karstens sent along a grid point time cross section for Ottumwa showing a very impressive setup for heavy snowfall taking shape on Sunday. The extreme amount of lift (depicted in red contours) is almost certainly convective and probably indicates a good chance for thundersnow. The image also depicts a period of moderate rain and freezing rain leading up to the heavy snowfall.

The feature title is the answer to the question of how many snow storms we have seen this winter. The featured chart is a calendar of daily Iowa COOP snowfall observations greater than 2 inches. The observations are for a 24 hour period and not the local calendar day, so there is some ambiguity to the chart. Nonetheless, you can see we have had a storm just about every week with 2 storms per week lately. More storms are on the way this week.

I have recently updated a number of processing components
of the IEM ingest of NWS COOP data. These are the daily reports
including high/low temperature and precip. Previously, I had
a mess of python and GEMPAK code to make this happen and had
big issues within the database keeping this all straight.
No more! I'm now sending all SHEF encoded data at my python
processor and am catching all the COOP data I can for states
in the midwest. The referenced URL contains sortable tables
of the most recent obs for all the states.
A part of this process was an update of the COOP station tables
the IEM maintains. Strangely, I found a handful of stations
that are not in the NWS NWSLI database. So if any NWS folks
read this and can let me know metadata on these stations, I would
appreciate it :)

The featured chart is a histogram of reported road conditions for Interstate 80 just west of Iowa City for February. Half of the month has seen non ideal driving conditions with around 12% of the time in a "Travel not advised" condition. Travel is still not advised this morning as wind continues to blow snow across the roads.

A massive area of cold polar air roared into the midwest last night dropping the temperature in Esterville 40 degrees and putting the wind chill at values less than -40°F below thanks to a strong NW wind. Temperatures will struggle to pass 0 degrees with high pressure right overhead. We can look forward to temperatures in the 20s on Thursday.

Tonight's procrastinated project was to improve the IEM website's
navigation. But was it improved? :)
The number one mentioned compliment of the IEM is the number of
useful tools available on the website. The number one compliant
is that they can never find the tool the next day when visiting
the website again. Hehe...
So I tried to better organize things with the top navigation
holding direct links to most of the popular apps in a somewhat
hierarchical fashion (I hope).
So let me know what you think and which apps you still can't
find.

With the recent stretch of brutally cold weather, a high temperature of 30 feels like a heat wave. The featured chart shows 6 of the last 10 days with high temperatures below average low temps in Esterville. The good news in the plot is that daily climatology continues its upward creep, so it is only a matter of time before we warm up (got to think positive!). The actual forecast has highs in the 30s before the next major snow storm approaches on Monday.

The featured map is an estimate of total snowfall for this winter based on NWS COOP reports collected by the IEM. This winter has seen a number of storms dump their heaviest snow in a line from Ottumwa to Dubuque to Milwaukee. Keep in mind that some locations on this map saw totals even higher than depicted. Our next chance of major snowfall is set to arrive early next week.

And yet another storm has turned Iowa's road system into a bobsled track. The good news is that an ever increasing solar angle is able to more effectively warm the road surface helping to clear the ice until the strong winds blow more snow over the road! Temperatures are expected to warm into this weekend with highs returning to the 40s.

The featured graph is from the Ames RWIS site for the past 24 hours. While air temperatures (red) only reached 25 degrees, pavement temperatures reached 45 degrees at a rather rapid rate. The pavement then cooled off to the air temperature late in the evening with the loss of solar heating. Then around 2 AM, there is a change in the cooling rate. This is a result of the sky clearing allowing rapid cooling. You can generate plots like these here.

The featured map was taken from the NOHRSC NOAA website showing recent reports of snow water equivalent (SWE). This value (in inches) is the depth of liquid water that the snowfall on the ground would melt to. Having 3 inches of water on the ground is a dangerous situation, since the ground is frozen and if a rapid melt was to occur this water would run off and cause other hydro problems like ice-jams. Much warmer weather is on the way after today's snowfall and rain, but temperatures are expected to freeze during the night time which helps to slow down snow melt.
