The IEMChat Project will be terminated on 2 February 2009 in
deference to a National Weather Service administered system
called NWSChat. IEMChat started back in 2005 as a testbed for
a nationwide Instant Messaging platform to support the operational
weather community. NWSChat is an effective formalization of the
IEMChat Project under NWS control. This is a good thing to help
promote a sustainable future for the technology.
I have been getting a number of questions about what exactly is
going away on 2 Feb. The only service being discontinued is the
actual chat server, which is now being run by the NWS. IEMBot,
various web pages, IEM Cow, VTEC Browser, and others will continue
to function as normal.
It has been an amazing ride these past 3 some years. IEMChat
finished with roughly 3,000 users, was used or tested for use
at nearly 100 out of ~120 NWS Weather Offices, and was favorably
mentioned as a best practice in 4+ formal NWS service assessments.
IEMChat was also used during high impact weather events in Iowa
including the Floods of 2008 and the Parkersburg Tornado.
I am also glad that IEMChat brought a lot of positive
notoriety to Iowa State University and the IEM. At the
University, we are supposed to be doing good things that
benefit the people of Iowa and beyond. I am very glad to
have been involved in this effort.

The featured chart is from the Marshalltown RWIS on Sunday into Monday morning showing air temperature and 3 pavement temperatures. The plot shows pavement temperatures warming nicely during the day with air and dew point temperatures creeping above freezing (implying a lot of liquid water on the road way). By later in the afternoon, colder air moved in and you can see the rapid drop off of temperatures and also notice the little bump in pavement temperatures near freezing when some heat is released by the water freezing around 4 PM. Roads remain slick this Monday morning.

The featured plot is of hourly temperatures observed at the Des Moines Airport sensor on December 1 for the past 9 years. This plot provides an interesting look at the different ways temperatures can change over the course of a day. Check out 2002 (orange line), it had the coldest early morning temperature while having the warmest afternoon temperature! Some years (like 2007) the temperature slowly rises the entire day, other years (like 2005) a downward trend occurs, and others (like 2000) not much change occurs at all!

The featured plot continues the series of hourly climatology plots. This plot is of average hourly wind speeds by hour and by month. The windiest time of year appears to be 4 PM in April and the least in the early morning in August. This plot nicely shows two maximums in the spring and fall. These are a result of the season transition periods as warm and cold air fights over Iowa! Large temperature gradients result in stronger winds.

The side histograms show the overall distribution of temps and winds. The moral to this story is that northwest winds are the most dominate and coldest! The secondary maximum near 35 degrees and southeast winds represents the common situation as storm systems approach.

The NWS Text Product Finder has been improved with a new
interactive interface and it has hopefully lowered the weather
nerd factor needed for its use. Previously, you had to know
what the NWS code ID was to find a product. Now, there are handy
pull down menus to hopefully find the products you are looking for.
The application also tries to remember what products you have
previously requested and will present those same products the
next time you view the page.
The application's list of products is not complete, so if you see
any that should be added, please let me know. I may also need to
adjust the application some to handle products that come out of
national centers or have IDs that include the state.
Some of you may not like this change, so I have placed the old
interface here:

Their forecast has the heaviest snow amounts just north of the state, while others have the depicted area shifted to the south with portions of Northeast Iowa expected to pick up upwards of 8 inches. Regardless, it is the first big winter storm of the year!

For this time of year, roughly a 45% chance exists that the high temperature will be below freezing. On the other hand, low temperatures are almost always below freezing this time of year. Our high temperature today may creep above freezing to help balance out our day yesterday below freezing.

The featured chart is of daily average high and low temperatures for Ames based on observations since 1964. The overall average is shown in the faint color. The two other lines for daily highs and lows represent days on which snow cover was or was not reported. The effect of having snow cover is very clear with temperatures always lower on average. The simple reason for this is an increased albedo, which keeps the suns energy from warming the ground which warms our air! If you want warmer weather, get rid of the snow on the ground (chicken and egg process).

A very intense cold front crossed the state on Sunday dropping our temperatures from the 40s and 50s almost immediately to values below freezing. The featured graph is a timeseries from the Corning SchoolNet site with observations shown every 6 seconds for a period of only 15 minutes! The rapid wind shift and initial temperature drop take place within a minute. Temperatures continued dropping for the rest of the day on Sunday and now are below zero for many locations in Iowa.

The cold front passage on Sunday was one for the record books due to the drastic and rapid change in temperature. Today's featured plot is a time series from Ottumwa showing an amazing drop of 80 degrees in 12 hours. Note this is a drop from an air temperature of 60 to a wind chill value of -20. The actual air temperature drop was around 60 degrees in just 12 hours! Some analysis is currently being done to compare this drop to others in the past, stay tuned.

This morning's NWS COOP network reports of snowfall show most of the state picking up from 2 to 5 inches of snow. The snow fell at very cold temperatures, so it is very light and fluffy. Our next storm is due tomorrow and will fall at temperatures closer to freezing, so it will be heavier and some areas will be warm enough to see rain and freezing rain.

The featured plot shows a BUFKIT time series (right to left) of precipitation amount and type from the Wednesday night run of the NWS NAM Model for Ottumwa Iowa. This plot would indicate an inch of ice accumulation between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. That amount of ice would cause considerable power outages and tree damage. Futher north in Iowa, more snow is expected with accumulations upwards of 8 inches.

A strong winter storm brought rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow to the entire state Thursday evening into Friday morning. The featured snowfall analysis shows a stripe of 6-10 inches of snow along US Highway 20 in Iowa. Southern Iowa picked up more sleet and freezing rain than snowfall. More winter storms are in the forecast with parts of Northwest Iowa in a blizzard watch.

The featured map is an analysis of minimum wind chill value on Sunday. Very cold air rushed into the state this past weekend thanks to strong northwest wind that gusted upwards of 40 miles per hour. A good portion of the state experienced wind chill values below -30°F. Winds have finally backed off some with slightly warmer weather expected before our next winter storm on Tuesday. Remember that today is only the 2nd day of winter!

The featured image is a scatter plot of next day high temperatures versus snow depth. The plot tries to answer the question how warm can it get the next day after having snow on the ground today. An old forecasting tip is that high temperatures rarely exceed 43 degrees with 4+ inches of snow on the ground. The 4 inch snow depth reference line on the chart indeed shows very few 43+ degree temperatures. With high temperatures forecasted in the 50s today, this will be exceptionally warm given our current snow pack!
