The <a href="http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/day1-5.shtml">HPC</a> five day rainfall forecast indicates very heavy rainfall over Southern Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana.  This area has already been devasted by flooding this spring.  We are looking at rain and snow in Iowa to end March with a chance of severe weather as well.

The featured graph is of soil moisture readings from the <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/scan/">Ames SCAN</a> site.  Values around 40% indicate saturation, which is roughly how much air space there is in our soil (replaced with water when saturated).  With only an inch or so of rainfall yesterday, the soil quickly saturated.  This is a bad sign for spring as heavy rainfall will produce excessive runoff, since the soil is already "full".  It will also take a considerable stretch of warmer and drier weather before field work can begin.

This illegible plot is of observed high and low temperature statewide for April 2.  After clicking the image, you will see how high temperatures are more variable this time of year with low temperatures tending to settle around freezing.  It would be nice to experience high temperatures on the upper end of the red curve, but for now we will have to settle for the 50s, which is better than the 30s experienced on Monday!

The featured graphic is of forecasted temperature, dew point, and precipitation for Thursday afternoon.  The red arrow is the wind direction.  This plot nicely illustrates a process called "evaporative cooling".  The wind is bringing drier air from the east underneath precipitation, which is associated with close to saturated air.  As the water drops fall thru this drier layer near the surface, it evaporates, which cools the air.  The effect of this process can be seen with the coolest temperatures found in Western Iowa while warmer air surrounds.  The big question is if this process can cool the air enough to produce snow!  The heavier rain showers will have the best chance of producing snow, since evaporative cooling will be strongest with those storms.

A plot of recent high and low temperatures for Ames shows a mostly below average stretch with highs in the 40s, whereas we should be in the 50s.  Friday and Saturday will be warmer, but another storm system is set for Sunday with another chance of rain turning to snow.  The overall forecast trend is for warmer weather, yes please!

What a nice weekend! The featured image is from Saturday showing solar radiation, 4 inch soil temps, and air temperature from the Ames ISUAG site.  The three curves are smooth since we had clear skies and no surface front passage.  The three variables plotted tend to vary as a sinusoidal function that correlates with the incidence angle of the sun.  The plot also nicely illustrates the difference in warming and cooling rates of the soil versus air.

Blizzard warnings are in effect to our Northwest while flood, severe thunderstorm, and tornado warnings are in effect to our south.  This is all thanks to a large storm system that will sweep thru today with the center expected to go right over Iowa.  This is actually a good thing for us, as it will keep most of the bad winter weather to our north and summer weather to our south.  The bad news is that our chances of snow will increase as this system passes to our east.

The NWS has issued a wind advisory today for forecasted southerly winds around 30 mph.  The featured chart displays directional frequency of reported 30+ mph wind speeds during April from the Des Moines Airport.  Southerly winds are not the most favored for high winds, since warming is generally occuring which leads to upward motion near the surface acting to keep the strongest winds aloft from reaching the surface.  The situation is reverse with northwest winds, since there is often cooling and decending motion which acts to bring stronger winds to the surface and keep them there.

The featured table is yet another illustration about how long this winter has felt.  The table shows a count of days above certain temperature thresholds between 1 Jan and 15 Apr for Ames.  Like a number of <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/p.php?pid=200804152155-KDMX-NOUS43-PNSDMX">other sites</a> in Iowa, Ames has yet to experience the glorious 70s.  Of recent years, 2008 has fewer warm days than even 2001 did!  The forecast for today will place us close to 70, we can only hope!

Soil temperatures have warmed to levels necessary for planting corn, but soil moisture remains high making tillage difficult.  While today looks great for drying out the fields, more rain is on the way for Thursday with a couple rounds of thunderstorms forecasted.

Temperatures dropped below freezing over much of the state this morning with clear skies and a cold high pressure system overhead.
