On October 1, the NWS will be officially implementing <a href="http://www.weather.gov/sbwarnings/">Storm Based Warnings</a>, which change the tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings to focus on specific threat areas instead of entire counties. This system will encounter some growing pains as everybody gets comfortable and alert systems are made "polygon aware". The featured image shows an experimental storm based warning issued by Davenport for a recent storm in Eastern Iowa. Under the new warning system, you can see how much less of Linn County is under the warning. The challenge will be for information providers to alert the public in a non confusing manner.
