They make this data available in monthly text files in an absolutely hideous text format with little documentation and no quality control. So after roughly 20 hours of labor, I got as much of this archive processed and into the IEM data coffers available for you to graph and download. Caveats galore! Please let me know if you see any bad data, which there is bound to be. Sorry if I sound grumpy about this, but the data was brutal to process and I am suprised that NCDC released this dataset with so many problems. So going forward, I will be ingesting months worth of data at a time as it becomes available the next month. The featured plot graphs the daily average temperature range, which can be thought of as the amount of warming that occurs. You can see that September and October experience the largest temperature swings, so cold mornings are more often recovered into nice afternoons. This was due to some very cold air that settled south from Canada and brought us record low temperatures on Saturday morning. Disregarding the day to day noise in the plot, a couple of things stand out. Firstly, temperatures are much less variable in the summer. The primary reason for this is the prevalence of a humid air mass acting to modulate our temperatures. Secondly, the winter season is most variable due to the influence of snow cover on our radiation budget and advection of warm or cold air masses by storm systems. For September, a sharp increase over summer is noticed as each day becomes more variable. The four lines represent the root mean squared error (RMSE) of the difference between high temps for a date versus the high temp for a date so many days into the future! Confusing, eh? What this plot is showing is persistence of high temperatures in time. The lowest RMSE values are for day2, which makes sense as tomorrow is more likely to be similiar today than the day after tomorrow. The RMSE values increase for day4 and day5, but are similiar in value. During the year, you can see the lowest values in the summer, which is due to the lack of strong cold fronts providing temperature contrasts.
