After 4 years of generating the product, it was about time to place
some documentation about the product on the website. If I failed
to be verbose enough, please let me know.
Also, I'm switching to winter based composites soon. This will
remove the requirement for the radar to be in "precipitation"
mode and remove the summertime clutter filtering.

| Title : 70s not uncommon
| Date : 31 Oct 07:21 AM
| Votes : Good: 17 Bad: 3
+----------------------------------------------
The featured graph plots out frequencies of high and low temperature observations for 30 October from the Iowa COOP data archive. The chart shows that having highs in the 70s are right around the 75th percentile (roughly once every four years). In general, the high temperature curve is flatter than the low temperature curve. This indicates how our variable our afternoons can be as we are dominated by warm or cold air transport into Iowa. Today a cold front is sweeping the really warm air out of the state with afternoon highs much cooler than yesterday.

The featured graphs show the daily high and low temperatures reported by the Des Moines Airport ASOS along with climatology. Red colors depict observations above average and blue below. A cursory look at the plot indicates much more red on the low temperature graph and the raw numbers show a 3 degree warmer difference. This year is consistent with the recent yearly trend of warmer than normal temperatures with highs much closer to average than lows. In general, low temperatures are increasing the most statewide with the high temperature trend neutral to slightly negative over the past 10-20 years.

A push of very cold air is making its way into our great state this Monday morning with wind chill indicies running in the lower 30s. | Votes : Good: 17 Bad: 7
+----------------------------------------------
A surge of very moist air made it into the state on Sunday with dew points (green line) rising into the mid 50s in Ames (RWIS site shown). If you get up before noon on Sunday, you should have noticed most surfaces being wet. The reason was that the dew point temperature was warmer than surfaces such as pavement, so air right next to the surface will cool to its dew point and water will be condensed out. The featured plot shows this as the 3 pavement temperatures become nearly equal during the morning hours before temperatures warm well above the dew point. You can also see the effects of the cold front that sweep out the moisture late Sunday night.

| Date : 15 Nov 12:03 AM
| Votes : Good: 12 Bad: 4
+----------------------------------------------
The severe weather event over the Southeast US on Wednesday was the first significant event this month. Looking back on recent years, the last half of November has been much more active (severe weather wise) for the United States with major outbreaks occuring after the 15th each year and roughly 3 times as many warnings issued than during the first 15 days. A majority of the warnings are a result of strong cold fronts that are able to push thru the Southeast US toward late November moreso than early. Will 2007 continue this trend? The long range models are hinting at a strong storm system around Thanksgiving!

The latest release of the National Drought Monitor shows some depicted dryness just to our southeast in Missouri and Illinois. Even with a very dry November, most of Iowa is well above normal for rainfall on various timescales this year. High streamflows and soil moisture values should keep us in good shape into the spring season.

+----------------------------------------------
A warm front has developed right along the Missouri and Iowa border with very moist and warm air just to the south. The northern side of the front is dealing with dense fog. Not much movement is expected with this setup today with fog and light rain common. Wednesday looks a bit more interesting with an swipe in southeast Iowa expected to get a few inches of snow!

| Date : 27 Nov 12:13 AM

+----------------------------------------------
The climodat reports are one of the most popular products
available on the IEM. While the reports are handy, they are
not the most portable to other applications. In the past, I have
made attempts to make the reports formatted in a strict
columnar format for easy import into Excel. Unfortunately, it
isn't that easy for most users to do.
So now I have created an on-line tool to convert the text reports
into Excel files on demand. You can save any of the reports you
see in Excel format for direct viewing on your computer. The text
formatted files remain the default for website display.
Please let me know if you see any reports that don't look quite
right in Excel.

The featured map is a of precipitable water (amount of water in a column of atmosphere) and near surface air temperatures (32 F contour shown) on Saturday evening from the NAM weather forecast model. The model shows the entire state below freezing with copious amounts of water available for the upcoming storm to work with. The exact placement of the heavy rainfall, sleet, ice, and snow bands is not clear cut yet with other forecast models providing much different solutions for location of the cold air. Regardless, it will be an event worth watching.
