Even with all of the excess water covering the ground in Iowa, temperatures soared into the upper 80s and lower 90s on Sunday. Hot temperatures, dry air, and breezy conditions created nearly ideal conditions to help dry out the fields that farmers desperately need to enter. Today looks to be nearly a repeat of Sunday with highs near 90 and some thunderstorms over Northeastern Iowa.

With the last two days of April being a taste of summer, our climatology shows us that highs are usually in the 70s more often then the 90s for this time of year. By the end of May, we will be approaching typical values of 80 degrees as we complete the transition into summer!

Our recent stretch of very warm weather has quickly warmed soil temperatures to values needed for crop seed germination. The forecast calls for near normal temperatures with slight chances of rain. So the corn seed that is in the ground currently will have a chance to grow.

Heavier rain showers have returned to the state this Friday morning with the Shenandoah airport sensor reporting nearly 2 inches of rain so far. Unfortunately, chances of rain are in the forecast for the next 7 days which is not a welcome sight for Iowa farmers.

The Tama webcamera captured a very nice lapse of a passing
gravity wave on Sunday morning. You can really see the crests
and troughs of the wave, but also note the cloud motion away
from the camera. Great stuff!
btw, I'm going to start putting webcam lapses on YouTube, since
it makes it so much easier for folks to watch them.

The featured image is a plot of counties warned by tornado warnings for this May up until today. According to my accounting, there were 299 warnings issued during those 6 days with well over 150 reports of tornadoes. The largest of these tornadoes destroyed Greensburg, Kansas and was surveyed to have the highest strength rating possible (EF5). Unfortunately, Iowa saw a handful of tornadoes as well.

A strong high pressure system to our east slowed the eastward progression of the storm systems that brought very heavy rain over Western Iowa. The featured image is an estimate of rainfall to date for May showing over 7 inches in places like Shenandoah and Council Bluffs, while Dubuque (in Eastern Iowa) has only seen a few drops.

The IEM has been generating nationwide NEXRAD composites since
2003 and archiving them every 5 minutes. The compositing was
done in a very simplistic manner and the image was often very
messy due to birds, nightime inversions, and other strange things
that can happen with the NWS RADAR. The result would be to
have blue blobs all over the image...
Tonight I have implemented a routine to compare the reflectivity
values against the "net echo top" product. The code looks for
reflectivity profiles that are at or above 10,000 feet. This
will cut down a lot on the blue blobs, but also negatively impacts
being able to see things like boundaries and perhaps winter precip.
So, at the referenced URL, there are two newly named products.
- "net_0" Current composite echo tops
- "n0r_full_0" The reflectivity composite using the old method
Sorry not to have done this sooner. Please let me know what you
think. I will be watching this closely to see how well it works.

Many times we focus on high temperatures as an indication if our weather has been warmer than expected. A plot of observed highs for the month from Ames shows that temperatures have been above and below normal. Check out the low temperatures! They have been running well above normal and the forecast for the next 7 days continues this trend.

The featured image is a dot plot of stream flow precentiles from the USGS WaterWatch website. The blue and black dots represent very high flow levels and you can see them along the Missouri River in Western Iowa. The brown and red dots represent very low levels and you can see them in Northern Wisconsin and certainly in the Southeast US. These areas have also seen wild fires due to the very dry conditions recently.

The featured chart is a time series of air temperatures from Sioux City (red) and Des Moines (blue). A cold front is currently pushing thru the state and you can see from the chart how it passed Sioux City first and then Des Moines by the lag in time for the temperature drop. Highs will be around 20 degrees cooler than yesterday, which will be closer to seasonal values for this time of year.

Locations in Eastern Iowa have seen a rather dry start to May with rainfall totals well below an inch. This is following a rather wet April and May, so the impacts are not significant yet. The featured image is of unofficial monthly rainfall totals for Dubuque showing that for the year accumulations are near normal. The next chance of significant rain only appears possible next week with chances of scattered showers today.

Temperatures cooled off nicely this morning thanks to clear skies and dry air. 32 degrees was reported in Cresco (shown on map), which would unofficially be 1 degree warmer than their previous record for the date. A warmup is in the forecast with highs back in the 80s and lows in the 50s for the weekend.

A front staled out over Northeast Iowa on Sunday seperating distinct air masses for most of the day. The featured chart is a temperature comparison between Oelwien and Decorah, who are only seperated by 50 miles. Places further to the east even struggled to get out of the 40s, while most of Iowa was in the lower 80s. This boundary will lift further north today allowing places like Decorah to enjoy the 80s as well.
