IEM Freeze plot for Wednesday morning shows an area of light precipitation falling in an area just above freezing with air and pavement temperatures. Today begins a three day period of very nasty winter weather with a blizzard watch now posted for Thursday. This storm will probably not produce as much ice as the last, but the second wave will probably produce more snow!

A massive storm is cranking up this Thursday morning with heavy snowfall rates reported in Western Iowa and severe thunderstorms all the way south to the gulf coast. This storm system is still strengthening as it lifts northeast over Iowa. A blizzard warning is posted for most of Western Iowa with the heaviest snow totals exceeding a foot!

On 1 March, the IEM web farm had over 2 million hits! That is the
largest number we have ever had! It is no where near the amount
of traffic popular sites like weather.gov does, but it is still a
decent number :)
Some specifics:

The # of Users is an estimate based on sessions and IP addresses of
remotely connecting computers. It is probably close.
The web farm appeared to have no difficulty handling this amount
of traffic. It should be able to take another couple million :)

I have put together 3 lapses from the fun today at the
ISU Agronomy Farm as captured by the webcam located there. My
attempts to fight back the snow with a backhoe and two tractors
were in vane as the lane remains drifted shut this evening. The
lapses nicely show the difficulties facing many Iowans today as
travelling was nearly impossible due to drifting and low
visibilities.

The western and northern half of Iowa is mostly shut down this Friday due to heavy snowfall and very strong northwest winds making travel all but impossible. The featured image is of road conditions over Iowa showing many parts of the interstate system closed and travel not advised everywhere else. Snowfall totals are approaching 18 inches over Northwest Iowa. Finally a snow storm like those we remember as a kid.

It is hard to remember that the calendar says March after our recent bout with winter. Average high temperatures should be around 40 degrees. Most of the state is covered with snow, but Southeast Iowa is snow free and temperatures warmed nicely there on Monday.

The most recent snow storm put down an impressive gradient of snowfall with 50-60 miles seperating the heavy and light amounts. The featured image is an analysis of reported snowfall depth. You can see Northern Iowa with 15+ inches and just a short distance southeast of there with less than an inch. These large gradients can become important later this spring with differential soil moisture producing airmass boundaries in the atmosphere that can influence storm strength.

The featured plot is of daily high temperatures versus snow depths for locations in Iowa this past weekend. There is some ambiguity to the timing of the snow depth and high temperature measurement, but it is close enough for government work. The main point is to show the effect appreciable snow cover has on temperatures. While Southern Iowa enjoyed 60+ degrees on Sunday, most of Northern Iowa struggled in the low 40s.

Our recent warm up to near record high temperatures has been greatly tempered by nearly a foot of snow that still exists over Northcentral Iowa. Today will be a repeat of Monday with highs even warmer over Southern Iowa. A cold front will sweep the state tomorrow and drop our temperatures back near normal.

Temperatures were nearly 30 degrees above normal on Tuesday setting record values at places like Des Moines, Ottumwa, and Waterloo. The featured image is a chart of daily high temperatures (dashed line) with the filled area being the departure from normal (solid line). Red areas are temperatures above normal while blue areas are below normal. You can see how our weather cycles from periods of warmer weather to colder. For this year, you can see the warmth of early January followed by the bitter cold of early February and then a brief warmup before the recent storms of late February and early March.

The Racoon River near Adel is full of ice and tree chunks from the recent rapid snow melt, river thaw, and tree damage from recent winter storms. These chunks got jammed underneath a bridge causing water to back-up and flood in the area. This scene was common from Iowa to the Northeastern US as winter quickly transitioned to spring. A new Iowa RWIS site has come on line near Bedford Iowa. It has
an official NWS ID of RBFI4 and makes the 56th site in the Iowa
Department of Transportation's network. More details on the
site are as follows:
Bedford is 3 miles West of Bedford on Hwy 2 in a pretty rural area.
It reports visibility, air temp, dew point/humidity, wind speed
and direction, precip type and intensity. This site is special in
that it has 1 regular surface sensor (sensor 0, WB bridge) and 1
active surface sensor (WB approach). The active sensor's got a
piggytail thermistor and a peltier element that flash freezes
the water/slush on the sensor to determine its freeze point. It
has a sub-surface sensor 18" under sensor 1.

The featured image is a dot plot of stream gauge flow percentiles. Many of the points in Iowa are in a blue or black color indicating "much above normal" flow. Thankfully we have not had any heavy rainfall events during this melting period, so major flooding has not occured. The forecast for the next 7 days looks positive for rivers to receed.

The featured image is a prediction of rainfall for this week from the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center. With many rivers already at bankful it won't take much to produce flooding concerns. All of this moisture will be thanks to an open for business Gulf of Mexico, which is the major source of moisture fueling thunderstorms in the midwest.

Last week, we featured a plot of high temperatures from the Des Moines airport station and their departures from normal. Today's feature is a similar plot of low temperatures showing the same general trends of warmer than normal weather followed by colder than normal weather with the general seasonal trend being upward.

The Storm Prediction Center has Iowa in a slight risk for severe weather today as a cold front will sweep the state later this evening. The primary threat will be large hail, but if the sun is able to break out during the afternoon, an isolated tornado may be possible as well. The sun provides low level heating which makes for a more energetic environment for thunderstorms to feed off of.

The forecast for this weekend appears to be as unsettled as the local college men's basketball coaching positions with strong to severe storms predicted each night. In each case, perhaps the winds of change can blow and allow us to enjoy the first official weekend of spring!

The featured image is of average 4 inch soil temperatures for yesterday from the ISUAG network. Not only have air temperatures been above normal, but soil temperatures have been as well. Current values are plenty warm enough to support corn seeds, but it is doubtful it will stay this warm thru late May as we should expect a few more cold snaps. After all, spring has just begun!

Thunderstorms errupted over the western plains on Wednesday producing over 60 reports of tornadoes and more than 160 hail reports! The featured map is from the Storm Prediction Center showing the locations of these reports in a rather narrow north/south line It will take a few days to sort out exactly how many unique tornadoes there were as storm surveys are completed.

It is a hard thing to curse the rain, since when it stops for a long period of time (drought) the impacts on agriculture in Iowa can be substancial. The featured image is of forecasted rainfall for the next 5 days showing the heaviest predictions of around 3 inches in extreme Western Iowa. There will be some threat for severe weather with these storms, but the primary impact will be flooding concerns.
