As time continues to fly right on by, another month is almost in the books. The featured chart (click it to see it) is of daily temperatures at the Ames Airport versus climatology. While high temperatures were below normal nearly half of the days, low temperatures were mostly warmer than normal. Today will be a nice day before more chances of rain enter the forecast for Friday and this weekend.

The featured map is a top-down water vapor estimation from the GOES satellite. These plots are used for many purposes including a simple way to see the motions of the atmosphere. There is a large upper level low system over the Dakotas (swirl in image) that will slowly move east today. Counterclockwise flow around this system will help to fire thunderstorms in Iowa today and this weekend.

Cold air aloft and strong June sunshine helped to generate daytime showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Since the storms were driven by surface heating and in the presense of some vertical wind sheer, some of them produced brief funnel clouds as updrafts are stretched. Our weather maker is finally moving away today, but there are a number of distrubances forecasted to keep our weather unsettled this week.

It is always a good time to check in on climatology for this date. Many locations in Iowa have exceeded 80 degrees with lows nearing 60. A low temperature around 60 infers that dew points are near 60 as well, since the low temperature often falls to the dew point in the summertime. Those dew point values are the start of the uncomfortable season of summer! Temperatures and dew points will be on the rise with the approach of a major storm system expected to bring widespread severe weather for the upper midwest.

The weather is set to get rough today and tomorrow with an unseasonally strong storm system developing this morning over the high plains. The Storm Prediction Center has parts of Iowa in a moderate risk for both days with the main threat for Iowa arriving on Thursday. The limiting factor for this event may be the amount of rich moisture that is available to be pulled north. This moisture provides the fuel for thunderstorm development.

interval observations from their network and then kindly provides

It is hard to not feature the Storm Prediction Center outlook again today. A lid of warm air that suppressed widespread storms in our area yesterday is expected to cool and allow explosive thunderstorm development today. The damaging wind threat looks to be the primary severe weather mode with a chance of a few long duration violent tornadoes and large hail. Please watch the weather closely today.

A dry line is a term used by meteorologists to describe a boundary between moist and very dry air masses, but it differs from a cold front such that temperatures are often as warm or warmer behind the boundary. These boundaries are common in places like Texas and Oklahoma, but are sometimes brought to Iowa by powerful storm systems like the one we experienced yesterday and often also spark severe weather. The featured image is from IEM Northeast Ames sensor showing the drop in dew point with the passage of the dry line.

The entire state has picked up more heat units than it would typically, but the application of GDDs since 1 May is not useful if the crop was just planted a few weeks ago! The featured graph is the distribution of hourly rainfall observations from the Des Moines Airport for the month of June (red) and for the year (blue) since 1973. The graph shows two clear modes for rainfall in Iowa. The first being around 6 AM due to the night time thunderstorm complexes feed by the low level jet in the summertime. The second being around 7 PM due to storms fueled by the heating of the day. In general, the night time is clearly the rainiest period during June with the other summer months showing a similiar distribution.

The featured bar chart is of monthly precipitation climatology for Ames. The blue bars are the average monthly accumulation and red bars are the average number of days during the month which have measurable precip. So for June, we average roughly 5 inches of rainfall spread over 10 days. In other words, we average 0.50 inches of rain every 3 days. Our recent weather for this month has been rather dry thanks to slow moving ridge that has kept the rainfall west of the state.

Our recent weather pattern has been stuck in what is commonly referred to as an "Omega Block". This happens when the jet stream is buckled around a strong anticyclone (high pressure system). The shape of the jet stream resembles the greek letter omega. This pattern has persisted for many days now keeping our weather dry, while it has been raining all week over South Dakota to Kansas. There is a strong jet over the Northwest US which should help to "flatten" out the ridge and get storm systems crossing the state again.

I've gotten a few reports that my level2 nexrad data site has
been distributing out bad files. I think I have found the
troublesome upstream site and am using a backup feed for the
data. Please let me know if you see any further issues for
volume scans after 0125z on 19 jun 2007.

Temperatures soared this weekend into the upper 80s and lower 90s over much of the state. Relief is on the way today thanks to a cold front which will sweep the state of the muggy conditions and bring some needed widespread rainfall. Highs are expected to return to near 90s by next weekend, the first official weekend of summer!

The thunderstorms on Monday were progressive enough to prevent really high amounts of rain from falling with rainfall accumulations around a half inch common east of I-35. The next chance of rain arrives on Wednesday and Thursday along with a chance of severe weather.

site is located at the Iowa Falls Airport and has an official

The Storm Prediction Center has Iowa highlighted in a slight risk for the next 3 days. The risk is primarily due to the forecasted development of numerous mesoscale convective systems (MCS) that will thrive off of the deep moisture and drive across the state mainly during the night time hours. This period is also the strongest heating days by the sun, since the days are the longest and the sun is the highest (most direct to ground) in the sky.
