A new RWIS site has been added to the Iowa Network. This site has
a NWS ID of RTMI4 and here is some more information from the DOT:
The Tama RWIS is actually not very close to the town of Tama at
all; it's at the intersection of Hwy 30 and 21. It's relatively
well placed for an RWIS since it's in a rural, open, flat spot well
away from the road. It has 2 surface sensors but only one is on at
the moment. The other will begin reporting in the near future.
The sensor that's reporting (Sensor 0) is located in Hwy 30
Westbound straight out from the tower in aged asphalt and the one
that's not up yet is nearly a mile West of the tower on the brige
over the Stein Creek (also WB lane, Sensor 1). There's a sub probe
under sensor 0. This RWISs atmospherics include an RM Young air/RH
sensor and wind sensor, and an OSI WIVIS which reports precip
identity, intensity, and visibilty up to 7.1 miles.

There was a brief outage of SchoolNet data between 4 and 6 AM this
morning. Our upstream data provider lost internet access during
that time. Sorry for any troubles this may have caused.

Our lack of recent rainfall and sunny days has helped to push 4 inch soil temperatures into the 90s, at least in Ames. You will want to click on the chart to get a legible view or generate your own <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/plotting/agc/">here</a>. The chart shows how soil temperatures have been warming during the past 60 days along with increasing solar input. It is kind of interesting to note that the climatological value has been decreasing for the past two weeks since the summer solstice, which is because the days are getting slightly shorter and the sun is hitting the ground less directly each day as its altitude decreases.
