The orange line is short wave (solar) radiation and its obviously near 0 until sunrise around 8 AM increasing to around 400 W m**-2 at midday. The air temperature trace in red shows three distinct regimes during this period.

The individual colors represent frequencies of observed wind speeds for 16 directions. The plot shows that winds from the Northeast and Southwest are rarely observed. The strongest wind speeds (20+ knots in red) are almost always from the Northwest, which is the most common wind direction. As you probably can recall, air temperatures have been well below freezing recently, so why have soil temperatures been warming recently? The reason is that warming blanket of snow sitting on the ground. The blanket traps the heat from deeper depths in the soil allowing the top soil to slowly warm. I have now generated a number of wind rose plots for sites in Iowa and surrounding states. You can access these plots from the "IEM Sites" section. Feedback is always welcome. Currently, there is a plot for yearly and monthly climatologies. Others can be added as requests are made. Plots for sites outside of the state will keep appearing over the weekend as the script keeps running :) Of the plots I have seen thus far, it is interesting to see the dominance of the southerly direction. If folks know of other institutions that have generated plots like these, it would be good to compare them. Its also neat to look at sites like Sioux City and Clinton, who are along river bottoms.
