The featured image is of average and actual hi/lo temperatures for January for Ames. It is hard to remember the first 10 days of January with high temperatures in the 40s and even a 51 reading on the third. Since the 11th, only 2 days have been above freezing. February looks to continue the recent streak of cold weather with the coldest air of the season expected this weekend.

Our recent stretch of cold weather is not because the Chicago Bears are in the Superbowl this weekend. It is a result of rather persistent northwest flow pumping cold air our way from Canada. No better way to illustrate how persistent than with a recent wind rose plot showing the dominate 3 directions being NNW, NW, and WNW.

The featured plot is of air temperatures from Shenandoah (southwest) and Dubuque (northeast) since Sunday morning. While temperatures have warmed in Southwestern Iowa, the cold northwest flow continues in Eastern Iowa creating a 20-30 difference in temperatures this Monday morning. This week looks cold, but warmer than last week with a good chance of snow this evening.

The main IEM database server was upgraded to PostgreSQL 8.2.1
and PostGIS 1.2.1 early this morning. There are a few issues to
resolve yet, but if you see anything failing, please let me know!
The server will continue to be rather slow today as some verfication
checks runs.
The IEM database server has nearly 100 GB of data stored inside
the database. In case you were curious. :)

IEM delivered road conditions shows most roads in the state covered with snow as a quick moving storm slides east today. Snowfall totals may approach 6 inches in Southeast Iowa as snowfall becomes heavy at times. The good news is that wind speeds are fairly light which will help keep the fluffy snow from blowing around.

Folks in far Southwest Iowa were briefly lucky enough to see their thermometers approach freezing on Tuesday as a warm front keep tantalizingly close to our south. The forecast doesn't hold much hope for experiencing such comfort again until perhaps next week as winter continues unabated.

A plot of observed and average temperatures this month for Mason City is shown. It doesn't take much imagination to say it has been colder than normal with high temperatures struggling to exceed 0, let alone the average low temperature each day. The only sign of hope in this plot is the upward trend of average temperatures with the spring season only a 40-some days away.

Snowfall reports this morning indicate upwards of 4 inches of new snow has fallen with 8 AM RADAR (shown) indicating the heaviest band just southeast of Des Moines over to Dubuque. This area can probably expect another couple of inches arriving at a storm total around 6 inches. This storm system will slide east today with very cold air set to arrive this evening.

An interesting small scale phenomena occured over Lake Superior on Tuesday. The featured loop is of visible satellite images, notice the counter clockwise swirl? This swirl is a result of very cold air settling over the open lake water. The warmer and saturated air over the lake quickly rises forming shallow clouds and over time organizes into a circulation you can see on satellite. A larger time lapse can be found here. And yet another winter storm system is set to affect the state this weekend with the primary threat being strong winds blowing whatever snow falls around reducing visibility and making for slick travel. This morning's NEXRAD shows the area of light snow to our northwest. The hope is that this storm will be the last for a while with much warmer weather expected next week with highs approaching 40 degrees!

Around 3 AM on Sunday morning, the IEM's database server crashed
hard and the process that should have rebooted it failed as well :/
I got things back up and going around 7:30, but there was some data

Air temperatures soared into the 40s and 50s yesterday helping to melt a lot of snow exposing the ugly shades of brown that had been hidden for the past month. Warm conditions will continue for the rest of this week until a very powerful storm system arrives just in time for the weekend. At this point, all forms of severe summer and winter weather are possible.
