The IEM has partnered with the NWS offices that serve Iowa to
bring the CoCoRaHS project to Iowa. This project is a grassroots
effort to encourage the public to collect high quality measurements
of rain, snowfall, and hail. The only requirement for participation
is purchasing an official 4 inch rain gage available from the website
and either attending or viewing the on-line training.
Look for CoCoRaHS products to start appearing on the IEM as this
projects gets spun up and as more observers get signed up.

The featured graph is of average July dew points and rainfall (color scale) for Des Moines since 1973. The preliminary total for 2007 is shown with a box around the data point. It is interesting to see how much lower dew points have been this year as compared with the past 10 years. These past 10 years have helped to push the overall dew point trend to +7 °F per 100 years (R2=0.14). Some of the increase is often speculated to be from increased agricultural activity and plant transpiration.

A cold front is bisecting the state this morning from northeast to southwest, but unable to produce much in the way of rainfall for us. The atmosphere above us is rather stable and the winds are weak. The sun will try its hardest to generate instability for us this afternoon and thus increase our thunderstorm chances, but widespread heavy rain is not expected.

The featured map is of rainfall reported from Saturday Night for locations just northwest of Des Moines. A swath of 2-3 inches fell with Rockwell City (RKWI4) receiving over 3 inches! The weather pattern for early this week looks stormy with more chances of heavy rainfall. A flash flood watch has been posted for most of central Iowa due to the threat of heavy rains Monday Night.

The featured map is data taken from the North American Mesoscale model analysis for 7 PM last night. The contoured value is precipitable water shown in inches. Precipitable water is simply a sumation of cloud water, ice, and water vapor thru the depth a column of air. Values last night were approaching 3 inches, which is well above climatology and is about the largest value we will see in Iowa. All of this water is then available for thunderstorms to become efficient rainers and some areas of the state found that out last night with locally heavy rains. Storm chances will continue today and Wednesday with the atmosphere above our heads still loaded with moisture.

The featured image is a time composite of maximum NEXRAD reflectivity for a time period from 7 PM Monday Night till 7 PM Tuesday Night (Aug 7). This composite gives a quick indication of where thunderstorms occured and the fine county of Story is highlighted showing how effective our storm shield has been working. Storms on Tuesday Night stayed south and with more storm chances today, it will be interesting to see how they will avoid the county this time.

The net result of all the rainfall chances early this months has been a donut shaped pattern of accumulation (Mmmmm, donut shaped pattern) centered over the state. There have been other parts of the state that have missed out on the rainfall as well, notably extreme northwest Iowa. The forecast only holds hope for summer like chances of precipitation and very hot conditions this weekend.

A thunderstorm complex erupted over Eastern Nebraska Sunday afternoon and quickly moved southeast to St Louis over night. Many folks in Southwest Iowa caught a great look at a shelf cloud which is the cloud feature on the forward push of cooler and more dense air. Winds gusted up to 70 mph with this storm. In weather, the dew point provides a support preventing the temperature from falling too much at night. The featured plot shows how for the last 9 days we have very warm over night temperatures which is a sign of the warmer dew points we have all been sweating through. In order to cool off, we need to get rid of some of this moisture! Thursday appears to be the start of a cooler period with a front helping to keep the muggy air south.

The featured graph is of observed and climatological daily low temperatures this year. The color shading indicates the departure from average with red being warmer than normal days. You can see that August has been well above average along with much of the rest of the year except February and early April. The trend in Iowa for the last 20 years is for warmer low temperatures and 2007 appears to be keeping with that trend.

On 1 August we launched the CoCoRaHS project in Iowa and 20 days later we have at least 1 observer in 66 out of the 99 counties in Iowa! We would really like to have the entire state covered by September 1rst, so if you know of anybody in those counties currently shown in white (no observers) please let them know about CoCoRaHS! The current flooding situation in Iowa shows how important these high resolutions observations are. You can see an impressive summary of August totals here!
