March was a very active weather month with the blizzard starting things off and then a severe weather outbreak to end the month. Daily temperatures were mostly above normal with the last two weeks of the month well above normal. The featured image is a calendar of daily high temperature departures from normal for Ames. The forecast for the early part of April calls for below normal temperatures with low temperatures dipping back into the low 20s.

Some of you may have hoped that we were done with the cold air for this season, but mother nature has another plan in store. High temperatures today will struggle into the 30s over Northwest Iowa while Southeast Iowa has already reached their high temperature near 70. Temperatures will remain below normal all the way to Easter Sunday.

A new RWIS site has been added to the Iowa DOT network. Details
of this site are as follows:
Eddyville, RPU 56, RDYI4.
It's located on Hwy 137, just West of the town of Eddyville. It has
one normal (FP2000) and one active surface sensor located in
the Westbound lane, and it is equipped with an air/RH sensor,
wind sensor, and a precipitation identifier/visibility sensor.

It is in close proximity to ag plants and their vapor plumes so it
may have unusual dew points, visibility, and surface conditions.

A plot of wind chill temperatures this Wednesday morning shows values way lower than expected for April. Carroll (CIN) has a value below zero! This morning's low temperatures were near record values of around 10 degrees. We were definetely spoiled by some very warm weather to end March.

The featured chart is of daily average 4 inch soil temperatures from the Ames ISUAG site. With the return of cold artic air, the near-surface soil has little chance of holding the recently gained warmth. With temperatures back around freezing, the impact on vegetation that got an early start on spring during the last two weeks may be fatal.

I have updated the ISU AgClimate pages this evening and have
included a new accumulation plot of Standard Chill Units. This
value is somewhat abstract to understand, but has relevant
application for fruit growers in the state. The link mentioned
in this news item contains more information on the plot.
I have also updated the daily plots to make them look much
cleaner and fix long standing plotting bugs (display only).
If you have ideas for new plots, please let me know.

The featured image is a wind rose for the Des Moines Airport this month. It is fairly obvious that northwest flow has dominated and is a big reason why temperatures have been below normal. The first in a series of storms will help break up this persistent flow pattern, but warmer temperatures will only be brief. A considerable amount of snowfall is even expected in Northern Iowa with these next storms!

Snow is currently falling in all parts of Iowa except the southeastern corner where it is still warm enough for rain. Snowfall totals are the highest along the Iowa/Minnesota border where up to 10 inches of snow is expected. The storm system is actually strengthening today and snow will continue to fall till early tomorrow morning.

Is seeing a snowfall on 11 April common? The featured chart for today attempts to address this question by plotting daily frequencies of snowfall occurances for years since 1951. You can see that the snowiest time of year is roughly the last week of January. The value for April 11th is around 15% which means roughly 1 out of every 7 years there is snowfall somewhere in the state. Overall for April, 53 of the previous 57 years have had snowfall in April so yesterday is not that irregular.

It has already been a year since a night time tornado ripped through downtown Iowa City causing millions of dollars of damage, but thankfully, no deaths. Unfortunately, there was a death from a different Eastern Iowa tornado that evening. It was great to welcome back spring on Sunday with bright sunshine, a slight breeze, and temperatures slightly above normal. Highs reached an even 70 degrees in the Missouri River Valley. The forecast for this week looks excellent with only slight chances of rain. Iowa farmers desperately need a week of dry and warm weather to make the fields tillable.

It did not take long for 4 inch soil temperature to recover to near normal values (purple dashed line) in the upper 40s. This warm up is thanks to bright sunshine and warmer air arriving in the state. This warm up was desperately needed by farmers who have gotten a late start on field work this year. The forecast looks good for continued drying with the main threat for storms holding off till Saturday.

Typically we are presented with the "average" temperature for a day which is just a straight arithmetic mean. For April 18th, the mean high temperature is somewhere in the low 60s. The featured chart shows the distribution of high temperatures reported for this day in Iowa. The dashed line is a histogram and the solid line is a cumulative distribution function. You can see that dashed curve is rather flat between temperatures of 55 and 75, which would indicate that temperatures are often in this range. After a feature yesterday about what exactly is normal, high and low temperatures on Wednesday were about as close to normal means as one can get! For us, the important part of this chart is the general seasonal trend upward and having temperatures above freezing!

The featured image is of forecasted high temperatures for this Saturday. Highs are expected to approach the upper 70s thanks to a strong southerly wind. These breezy and warm days are very effective at drying out farm fields and warming soil temperatures, both of which are desperately needed to get the corn planting back on schedule.
