The featured graph is of daily statewide average volumetric soil moisture values since March 1 based on our local modelling. A wet July and August have moistened the topsoil over much of the state and improved an otherwise dry situation that was setting up in May and June. This year has been somewhat atypical with May/June usually being very wet and July/August dry.

The featured image is of the wind circulation about 10 km above sea level. The circulation to our east is an upper low system that has brought us crummy weather since last Friday. Its slow trek east is finally going to take it away from us allowing sunnier skies for the remainder of the week.

Comparing webcam images from different months but the same time of day shows how much higher in the sky the sun was back in July. The days are getting shorter as we get closer to the 12 hour day of the fall equinox.

A plot of high and low temperatures for Ames for the past week shows the recent downswing in temperatures. The high temperature on Monday was the coldest it has been since 14 May. Low temperatures tonight are expected to dip to near record values over the northern half of the state. The seasons are changing my friend, ready or not!

Fall officially began this past weekend with the fall equinox. Besides the approximate 12 hours of daytime, the sun sets nearly due west for most every point on earth. The featured image is from the Indianola webcam auto tracking the sunset on Sunday. A due west sunset would be 270 degrees of azimuth (Az). This time of year is dangerous for drivers as the sun at sunset and sunrise will be directly in line of sight for east-west roads.

The famous Goodyear Blimp is gracing us with its presence this week in Jefferson to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a local tire dealer. The web camera in Jefferson has been closely watching the blimp. The camera is zoomed in about as far as it can go, so the image is somewhat blurry.

The featured plot is of average daily high and low temperatures for Ames. The Ames site shows an interesting climatological increase in temperatures for the first few days of October. You can see this feature present at other sites as well. The forecast for the first few days of October, which is this weekend, calls for above normal temperatures with highs on Sunday approaching 80 degrees over the western half of Iowa.
