NOAA's NWS is forecasting a repeat of the temperature gradient over the state yesterday for today. Yesterday, the high temperature in Shenandoah was around 70 while the high in Decorah was only 39. For the last day in February, both temperatures are at or above normal so it is hard to complain!

Earlier this evening, the 30,000th trouble ticket was generated.
The IEM generates and tracks trouble tickets for stations within
some of the IEM networks. Many of these tickets are automatically
generated and closed by programs that monitor the data feeds.
Someday I hope to make this rich metadata set more readily available
on the website.

March certainly came in like a lamb yesterday with very pleasant weather and temperatures well above normal even approaching the upper 70s in Southwest Iowa. Today won't be as warm as yesterday with breezy conditions and highs generally in the 40s. Our attention turns to a weekend storm system that could bring some light wintery precip.

The featured plot was taken from the RWIS time series plotter for the Ames site. You may want to click the image to get a better view. You can see how the pavement temperatures warm more than the air temperatures during the day. The implication is that the increasing solar angle is becoming more direct on the pavement surface and thus able to more efficiently warm it. So the next time winter precipitation falls, it won't take much sunshine to quickly melt the mess away.

With one storm it rained more than the entire month of February. Much needed rainfall fell over the drought stricken areas of SE Iowa this weekend with eastern and northern parts of the state receiving snow. We are in a very active weather pattern with numerous chances of rain this week!

The featured plot is a 48 prediction of accumulated precipitation ending Thursday Night from our locally run MM5 model. The model gives most of the state a quarter to an inch of rain with much heavier amounts to the south around Kansas City. At this point, we will take whatever rain we can get.

A rather impressive line of storms formed early Tuesday morning and plowed east through Iowa. A couple of storms early on were able to dump some large frozen precipitation in the form of hail! This featured storm dumped 1.5 inch hail in Woodbury County. With the interactive radar app, you can go back and look at the event with storm reports and warnings synced with the radar.

Wednesday afternoon turned out to be a mini severe weather outbreak over Southern Iowa as a lower atmosphere warm front lifted into the state collided with cold to the north. The result was a series of strong updrafts supporting hail development and the hail fell covering the ground like snow in some locations. The featured picture shows some of the hail stones. The funny shape stone was formed by a wet bigger hail stone freezing smaller hail stones while in the cloud. There will be more chances for hail this weekend.

The raw Level II NEXRAD data site has now been moved onto the
IEM web farm. You can access realtime data at the referenced
URL with this news item. The previous server was already full to
capacity with other processes and showed some latency during the
severe weather Wednesday night due to a large demand. The IEM
web farm should be able to handle a large number of users.

The featured plot combines rainfall estimates for March along with the current Drought Monitor product valid 7 March 2006. Amounts exceeding an inch have fallen in the most drought stricken areas, but it will take a lot more rain to make up longer term deficits in the area. Thankfully there are more rain chances this weekend.

During yesterday's outbreak, an interesting super cell storm was
able to persist over 6 states and roughly 13 hours. It formed
in Northern Oklahoma and then trucked northeast up into Michigan.
I have generated a couple of radar animations of this storm. Note
the file size is somewhat large.

What a wild weather day it was on Sunday! The featured plot shows all of the severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings and watches issued in the past 24 hours by the National Weather Service. The Pleasant Hill (Kansas City) office issued 103 warnings (57 severe thunderstorm and 46 tornado)! It will take a while to sort out the tornado reports, but Sunday will certainly go down as a super outbreak day with a preliminary count of over 100 tornados.

Skies cleared out last night and with a fresh snowfall on the ground in Northern Iowa, temperatures dropped nicely into the teens. Considering that average low temperatures are around 22 degrees, these current temperatures are not that abnormally cold. Looks like temperatures will be similar for the rest of the week with a good chance of rain and snow on Wednesday.

The featured plot shows IEM computed monthly rainfall for the first order airports in the state. (Values are in hundreths of an inch). The 2-3 inches of rainfall thus far in SE Iowa is certainly a welcome sight, but it will take much more rainfall to make up for long term deficits of 10+ inches in the area. March is an excellent time to make up these deficits with limited agricultural impact, but the Ides of March is already here, so planting season is just around the corner.

A quick moving winter storm is getting cranked up this morning with winter storm warnings (pink) posted from Minneapolis to Chicago. The snow will fall very quickly with rates over an inch per hour. It looks like our snow chances aren't done with another system due this weekend to remind us that it still is winter.

A quick perusal of the network of web cameras indicates a lack of green over the country side with today being a mandatory day for doning green. Punishment for breaking this rule is a pinch. You should probably wear gloves if you start pinching trees or thorn bushes.

A dry northeast flow of air continues to run against a large area of precipitation to our west. The effect is for most of the precip to evaporate before reaching the ground. This process also saturates and cools the atmosphere until it is humid enough for the precip to make it all the way to the ground like it is near the Nebraska border. The featured plot shows relative humidity along with NEXRAD. You can see how much more humid it is where evaporation is occuring.

This is probably not what most people would hope for on the second day of Spring. A strong storm system has brought wind and snow to the state today with ammounts approaching a foot in Western Iowa. This snow will not last long as any sunshine will quickly melt the snow from above and warm ground and pavement temperatures will melt the snow from below. Perhaps this can be winter's last stand?

A springtime clear day, fresh snow cover, and two trees made
for interesting theater on Wednesday. The captured lapse
from the Ames webcam simply illustrates the basic concepts of
absorption and reflection of long and short wave radiation.
The short wave radiation coming from the sun is reflected by the
white snow and absorbed by the green tree. Long wave radiation
is then emitted by the tree which is readily absorbed by the snow
thus melting it next to the trees. These rings in the snow are
sometimes called 'tree snow rings.'

The featured plot gives you an indication of how effective the sun is these days. The plot shows RWIS pavement temperatures and air temperature (red line) for Tuesday. After the snow storm ended mid morning, the clouds started to thin and more of the sun's energy reached the pavement surface and quickly warmed it up to around 60 degrees. The positive outcome is that road conditions quickly improve during winter weather this time of year.

A cursory look at average temperatures for today quickly indicates that our recent cooler weather is well below normal. Today looks to be another cool day with a good chance of snow over Northern Iowa. The forecast for the next week continues this cooler than normal trend. Not much can be done about it other than to complain about it.

The NWS Des Moines NEXRAD site will be offline for the early part of this week for scheduled system updates. So you will want to check out local TV radars if you want to see the much needed rainfall falling this morning in Central Iowa. The heaviest amounts are only around .25 inches at this time, but a couple more storms are on their way.

For the past week, weather models have been indicating a severe weather situation unfolding on Thursday with a significant outbreak possible across the plains. The featured plot from the Storm Prediction Center highlights this risk area with further revisions and categorical upgrades today. But for today, temperatures will finally climb above normal with a very spring like feel.

A view from IEM's Interactive RADAR app shows a lot going on already this Thursday morning. A strong spring storm will move east over the plains today bringing a wide spread severe weather outbreak to locations mostly south of Iowa. The key to an enhanced severe weather threat is if the afternoon sun is able to heat the lower atmosphere providing a more unstable situation. Even so, it appears March is going out like a lion.
