The DOT sent along word that all of the newer AWOS sites will
be outfitted with present weather sensors. Pella (PEA) and
Mount Pleasant (MPZ) have already been updated. Independence (IIB)
and Vinton (VTI) will be soon. These sites will still lack tipping
buckets tho.

The featured image shows precip probabilities for May at Ames. The total of 1.08 inches was around a 5% chance (1 in 20 years) and about 3 inches below normal. It is now June tho and today brings a very good chance of rain, so hopefully we can make up some of these mild deficits.

Oh what a treat these web cameras are! Today a number of storms
errupted along a "cold" front and the web cams caught great looks
at a couple of the towers that rapidly went up. The Pella lapse
is just tremendous!
You can also note ice being ejected out of the vigorous updrafts
as well. Just text book stuff :)

A long advertised cold front is moving through the state this morning with showers clipping the eastern third. The front will kick off showers east of I-35 today and finally truck on out of here. Not everybody got rain, but some is better than none!

The featured sequence of images was taken from the Creston webcam yesterday showing explosive thunderstorm development that was common over Eastern and Southcentral Iowa. You can view movies from this camera and others here. The lapses show the vigorous updrafts that make these thunderstorms grow so quickly. If you look carefully, you can sometimes see ice getting ejected out of the top of the really strong updrafts.

The state wide heavy rainfall event never materialized this past weekend with only NE and extreme SW corners of the state receiving over an inch. The forecast this week doesn't hold much hope for heavy rainfall with temperatures warming above normal again.

The first tropical storm of the season almost made hurricane strength before coming onshore this morning over Florida. The primary threats from this system will be storm surge during high tide and isolated tornados. Unfortunately, many are forecasting this storm as the first of many this year.

The featured plot is an attempt to illustrate the chances of recovering accumulated rainfall departures before 1 August. The plot shows 1 May - 1 Aug rainfall departures for Iowa stations and years which had 1 May - 14 Jun rainfall deficits of 2 to 4 inches (like many spots in Iowa this year). The black line then denotes the chance that for the period of 1 May - 1 Aug a location will end up at or above normal for precipitation for the period. Confused yet? The hand waving bottom line is that the chance is roughly 10% of at least breaking even and 90% chance that locations currently 2-4 inches below normal will still be below normal on 1 August.

NEXRAD storm attributes from the US. This zip file is generated
each minute with attributes valid from the last volume scan from
each 88D in the past 20 minutes. Please give me feedback if you
are interested with improving the attribute table schema or

GIS WMS/WFS services will be added once folks are happy with

It is hard to feature anything other than the accumulating rainfall deficits for many locations in the state. Recent rains have been occuring in the state, but the wide spread prolonged rains have not happened. More chances of rain this week which is certainly better than no chance.

The thunderstorm complex Tuesday morning brought heavy rainfall to Eastern Iowa and some very strange looking clouds to major urban centers like Cedar Rapids. The featured image and many others were captured by many people with many questions about how clouds like that form. They are a result of a very strong and stable boundry between humid air and drier air. The cloud's border sort of floats along this interface and appears to be very sharp due to the near zero entrainment of dry air which would produce a "fuzzy" look.

The Chariton webcam caught an interesting look at what appears to
be an "undular bore" resulting from a strong convective complex to
the south on Thursday morning. Local experts still aren't
positive this was indeed that phenomena, so once we get our
stories straight, I will link it in on the "Cool" page.

The featured image shows the peculiar rainfall hole that has developed in Iowa centered over Des Moines. Southeast and extreme Western Iowa has not faired much better with totals generally below half an inch. A cluster of storms is adding to those totals in SE Iowa this Thursday morning, but very limited chances of rain exist for the remainder of the month. It is not looking good.

The current drought monitor product shows the areas of abnormal dryness in the state, but just to our west and southwest things are much worse in places. A somewhat wet April may have saved this growing season from being a complete disaster by providing some soil moisture before planting.

Thanks to the support of the Unidata Program of UCAR, the IEM has
updated the NEXRAD Web Map Service (WMS) to support the "time"
specification to deliver our archive of 5 minute composite
reflectivity via this Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Service.
I have added this service as another layer to the currently used
WMS. It is called "nexrad-n0r-wmst". The layer contains CONUS
imagery every 5 minutes back to 1 August 2003. Note that the archive
is mostly completely, but there are some small holes.
Please let me know of any comments or suggestions. A big thanks
goes to David Bitner of the Metropolitan Airports Commission for
suggesting this addition and helping get it setup. Also, the
#mapserver folks on IRC were a big help and Frank Warmerdam for
providing a nearly instant patch to get Mapserver to support this
setup (postgis as a tile store for rasters with a time dimension).

An anamolous upper level low to our east brought cool air over the state in the middle of the lower atmosphere. With a strong June sun, the atmosphere destabilizes and showers develop moving along the northwest flow and track to the southeast. You can see these tracks in the rainfall estimates for yesterday. This pattern will repeat today with the storm system slowly moving away by tomorrow.

Today's rainfall forecast for the United States indicates a lot of rain is expected to fall over the east coast today. Totals over 3 inches (red color) are expected over a large area. It would be nice if this map were moved a couple thousand kilometers west, but we will have to take what we can get.

The table presented here provides an interesting comparison of winds, rainfall, and dew points for the past 7 Junes for Ames. The first noticable value is the average 4 PM dew point of only 54 degrees with all other years in the upper 50s and 60s. Certainly not having much rain is involved in our low dew points due to decreased evaporation, but perhaps the most important factor is the lack of southerly winds shown by the very low value of v-component wind. The v wind is simply the component of the wind from the north or south. A larger value of v indicates a stronger southerly wind and thus greater moisture transport from the more humid air masses to our south. You can see the largest v values associated with very humid June months of 2005 and 2002.

Recently, I have gotten a number of requests for shapefiles of
NWS issued watches and warnings for different time periods. You
can now download these yourself on the website for a time period
of your choice. The automatically generated shapefiles contain
county and polygon based watches and warnings.
Please let me know if you have any troubles or suggestions. This
should be a popular new feature as well :)

You may want to click the featured plot to get a cleaner view. The plot is of hourly air and soil temperatures yesterday along with solar radiation. It is interesting to see how soil temperatures were warmer then air temperatures and even had a larger diurnal range. The reason is that the soil is very dry at the Ames site and without moisture the sun can very efficiently warm the soil.
