For many parts of the state, average temperatures have been above normal everyday this month. The featured image shows how much above normal the average temperature was each day for Ames. The forecast today is much above normal as well so the streak will continue! So much for January being the coldest month of the year.

I have added a number of sites to the "climodat" reports. These
include:
Allerton
Boone
Burlington
Creston
Des Moines Airport
Lamoni
Le Claire Lock & Dam 14
Ottumwa
Some of these sites are missing a considerable amount of data. I have
done some work to estimate missing temperatures using simplistic
neigherest neighbor schemes. Precipitation is another story.
Okay story time... The climodat reports have been based off of a
dataset that was maintained by staff at Iowa State. The last of these
staff members retired around 2001. Since then, we have been ingesting
a feed provided to us by the state climatologist. His dataset
contains many more stations than we previously tracked.
So this dataset remains in flux. If you find errors, we will work on
fixing them. Missing data is a tough one. While estimating
temperatures is not too difficult, precipitation is not easy.

I have added an application that maps out daily climate observations
from our collection of data from the NWS COOP network dating back to
1893. Note that due to differences in reporting time, some locations
on these maps may have values much different than surrounding sites.

The big story this winter continues to be the relatively warm soil temperatures as frost is not present for most of the state. Some farmers are taking the opportunity to apply anhydrous ammonia or finish up chisel plowing. The ground has remained warm due to protective snow cover during the very cold first weeks of December.

Forecasted high temperatures for Friday are much closer to normal than we recently have been. In fact, the forecast for the next 7 days looks much more winter like with highs around freezing and lows in the teens. There will also be a few chances of light snow, but nothing for you to get your snowmobile started for.

A simple comparison of recent webcam images valid at the same time of day indicates what our bodies are already feeling, the days are slowly getting longer! Recall that we are only 40 some days removed from having 12 hours of sunlight. The days will continue to get longer and there is nothing much that can be done about it until the summer solstice. Somebody must have plugged the freezer back in as soil temperatures have once again cooled to below freezing with the recent stretch of cooler air temperatures. The forecast for the next 7 days looks to be about normal with highs bouncing around 32 degrees and lows in the teens. It is good to have winter back.

Tuesday night's snowfall left an interesting footprint on Iowa. Visible satellite imagery from Wednesday nicely shows the band of snow following the Des Moines River. There are more chances of light snowfall thru Saturday, so we will be vigilant for other interesting snow patterns!

Our recent rounds of winter weather was only able to net us 1 or 2 inches of snow. Some parts of the state missed out entirely. It is nice to see the landscape covered with something a bit prettier than the dull browns we have been suffering through all winter.

The Blank Park Zoo webcam is monitoring an African Bongo who
is about to give birth. Bongos are extinct in the wild, so the
Zoo vets and ISU are keeping a close eye on the camera to watch
her progress. If the baby survives, it will be part of an
international program to place bongos in the wild. Thanks to the
Zoo for passing along this info.

The warm up started early this morning with a ridge sliding thru the state switching our winds to the southwest with a strengthening low pressure system to our north. Temperatures have responded nicely with highs expected in the 40s the next two days before a very interesting storm system brings our best chances of snow in a while to the state.

Today is a great day! Today is the celebration of the IEM's 1,000th feature! After 4 years of features, we continue to come up with something interesting and, most importantly, an unique feature title most every day. Since we live in a democracy, you got a chance to vote on the daily feature starting in 2005. It is no coincidence that the highest rated feature is the only one with my picture in it. The irony of the text in that feature was that the camera was nearly hit by a weak tornado in September 2005. Some of my favorite features include: MCC, MCS, MCV equals MESS, A pile of data!, Tornado or Not Tornado?, Insurance Policy, and Hot, Hot, Hot. Care to share yours?

On Friday, the IP internet address of the mesonet server cluster
will change. The new IP will be 129.186.185.33 . The trickiest
part of this change will be the time it takes the DNS change to
propagate the internet. I have a few tricks up my sleeve
attempting to mitigate any troubles. If you do have trouble,
please let me know! The change will occur late afternoon on
Friday 17 Feb 2006.
The change is necessary due to a network update occuring within
the Agronomy Building.

Whoa nelly! Any excess warmth you got yesterday from either the 1000th feature, your life partner for Valentine's Day, or the 60 degree temperatures will be needed these next couple of days as winter is coming back with vengeance. IEM Freeze is nicely showing the boundary that exists with warm moist air to the south and very cold air to the north. All forms of winter weather will be possible later today with snowfall totals the greatest in Northern Iowa.

A wintry mix of weather is impacting Iowa this morning with heavy snow affecting areas in Northern Iowa and freezing rain/sleet in Southern Iowa. IEM produced maps of road condition reports and radar show an interesting situation with more convective rain like features in Southeastern Iowa (roads are green indicating wet conditions) and more sleet like features in Central Iowa (roads are orange indicating travel not advised). Once the precipitation stops, temperatures are expected to fall with the arrival of the artic air mass to our north.

A plot of temperatures for the past 7 days indicates the wild swing of temperatures with a high of 64 last Tuesday and only 8 on Friday. The important part is the upward trend of temperatures starting on Sunday and expected to continue this week. Highs won't be in the 80s like in Australia, but they will at least be above freezing.

It was neat to see the puffy summerlike afternoon clouds yesterday with very pleasant temperatures for late Febuary. The sun's incident angle to the ground is increasing with each day, which means the sun is more effective at warming the ground and then the air up during the day.

The featured plot highlights the change in the National Drought Monitor classification for the past 5 months. You can see that for the most part, last fall and winter has not been wet enough to recover from accumulated dryness in the state. The catch 22 is that a wet spring could erase some of these rainfall deficits, but would also delay spring planting due to wet fields. We will just have to be thankful for whatever rainfall we get this spring.
