Ah yes, this is what winter is like. Bitterly cold air is feeling even colder this morning thanks to the help of a strong wind reducing the wind chill to below zero for much of Iowa. Yet another storm system is set to arrive this evening and bring heavy snow to extreme Southeast Iowa.

polygons and VTEC. Naturally, today I'm polishing some of the apps
that will be highlighted during my talk. The referenced app here is
named 'VTEC Product Browser'. (VTEC is the coding the NWS uses when
they issue most warnings and watches so that computers can easily
process the product.)
If you see any bugs or have any suggestions on the page, please

A major winter storm has brought nasty weather from Texas to Michigan with snowfall totals over a foot common in Missouri, Southeastern Kansas, and Oklahoma. The storm is tracking to the northeast and will be severely impacting the Ohio Valley and Northeastern US on Friday.

Usually, the lack of sunshine allows temperatures to cool during the nighttime. Late Sunday evening the winds switched to a more southerly direction and warmer air advected into the state with temperatures rising slowly during the night. Maximum temperatures will be mostly on the rise this week with values approaching 40 degrees by the end of the week!

A plot of temperatures this Tuesday morning reveals the coldest air over the far southern part of Iowa with low temperatures approaching 0 degrees. With clear skies and cold air advecting into the state, wind chill temperatures are running well below zero this morning. This is thanks to yet another cold front passing thru the state allowing that nice Canadian air in. The forecast calls for warmer temperatures, but it is only December and we will surely see similiar coldness again, perhaps worse!

You can now download shapefiles of LSRs for a time period of
your choice for a period dating back to 1 Jan 2003! Note these
files are not official storm data and probably contain some
errors. Having said that, I do have a rather high degree of
confidence that there isn't any missing data.
Note, we are now generating 'real-time' shapefiles as well. They
are being generated every 5 minutes and contain the past 24 hours
worth of Storm Reports. You can find a link to that on the GIS
page or the above URL.

The cold weather certainly reminds us of winter, but wouldn't it be nice to have a nice blanket of white snow out there to cover up the ugly shades of brown evident from the webcameras. The forecast for the next 7 days doesn't hold much hope either.

A bit of instability was able to fire some thunderstorms late Monday evening with a report of hail near Nevada (shown). Kind of strange to be seeing the frozen precip fall as hail and not snow this time of year!

The featured image is the 6-10 day temperature forecast from the Climate Prediction Center. The darker shades do not indicate warmer temperatures, but rather more confidence that temperatures will be above normal. So for the period between 18 and 22 December, our temperatures will probably be above normal. This is in line with the overall prediction of a warm December and our actual above normal December thus far.

Satellite snow cover estimates from NOAA indicate that most of the snow that fell a few weeks ago over the Midwest has now melted save an isolated spot in Illinois. You can see the lake effect snow regions of the Great Lakes still blessed with snow as well as points further north in Canada.

Thursday was one of those typical December days in Iowa with highs in the 50s (sarcasm) thanks to a warm westerly wind. A new "climodat" report has been generated titled
"Freeze/Thaw cycles". Lets see if I can confuse you explaining
what this is. The report counts the number of cycles between
two threshold temperatures for a particular year and season. This
is sort of driving at freeze and thaw cycles we experience each
year. For example, here are fictitious daily observations and
our threshold is set to 26-38
DAY HIGH LOW
JAN 5 23 12
JAN 6 40 18 <-- cycle up (38 exceeded)
JAN 7 40 28
JAN 8 29 14 <--- cycle down (26 exceeded)
JAN 9 20 10
So there was 1 cycle for this example. Make sense? Tomorrow's
daily feature will have a map showing how these values look
spatially.
It is interesting that the overall ratio of spring events to
fall events is around 1.3 for the tested thresholds. In other
words, there are 30% more freeze/thaw events in the spring
than fall.

The featured map is the number of expected fall season temperature cycles between 14 and 50 degrees Fahrenhit. The formulation is that once the fall temperature dips below 14 and then later exceeds 50, that is 1 cycle. The map shows the favored area for these temperature variations is Southwest Iowa with roughly 2.5 cycles expected based on climatology. Values for other temperature thresholds can be found on the climodat page under Freeze/Thaw cycles.

A plot of NWS warnings this Tuesday morning shows much of Western Nebraska with parts of Kansas and Colorado under a blizzard warning! A very large storm system to our southwest will be throwing moisture our way the rest of this week with the main threat being heavy rainfall. Northwest Iowa should see some ice and snow accumulations where temperatures are slightly cooler.

The major storm system to our west will be approaching the state this weekend and after some heavy rain may finally bring some snow showers on Monday.
