Severe storms yesterday brough very strong winds, a brief tornado or two, and some very funky looking hail. The featured image taken by Rita Gergely of Des Moines shows one of these hail stones. This stone was formed by a number of smaller stones that fused together on their way to the ground. Another round of severe weather looks probable on Sunday and then again later next week!

A strong surface low pressure system brought severe weather to the state on Sunday and very strong winds on Monday. Winds have been gusting to around 40 miles per hour with isolated higher gusts. Another storm system is set to affect the region on Thursday as our unsettled spring pattern continues.

All of the redish areas are estimated to have lost 4+ inches of water in the top ~6 feet of soil in the past year. This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week with today being the statewide tornado drill. This year has been somewhat unusual for the amount of severe weather we have already experienced before the awareness week! Tornado sirens like the one shown will be blowing today around 10 AM as a part of the drill. This may be an ironic warmup for a very dangerous situation shaping up for Thursday.

The modern poet Iron Maiden may have given mitigating advice for today recommending a run to the hills to avoid danger. The Storm Prediction Center has most of Western Iowa within a moderate risk of severe weather with a 15% chance of tornados. The key for materializing the threat will be sunshine to enhance the instability and increased moisture transport from the south.

The Ames webcam caught a glimpse of the light show provided by a quick moving storm system that affected Southern Iowa Tuesday night. Our next chance to see similar weather will be Thursday night with stronger storms forecasted for the weekend. Temperatures will remain well above normal.

Up until about 7 PM, Thursday would have went down in Iowa weather lore for being a record warm day. All of that heat helped to fire an explosive thunderstorm complex that brought numerous reports of large hail and unfortunately a number of destructive tornados to Eastern Iowa. More severe weather is possible today and especially again on Saturday as severe weather season 2006 continues on at a record pace.

The featured plot is daily solar radiation (red) and average 4 inch soil temperatures (black) for April from the Ames ISUAG station. Recent sunny days and warm air advection has helped to rapidly warm soil temperatures to levels acceptable to begin corn planting! Allthough it is now warm enough, recent rains have made most fields too wet to plant. This week looks to be about average for temperatures with chances of rain most every day.

For what has become a twice per week occurance, Iowa is once again placed in the slight risk for severe weather by the Storm Prediction Center. While Central Missouri appears to be under the gun for this event, some severe storms are expected to develop late afternoon over SW Iowa and move east into the evening.

Just a state away in South Dakota is experiencing a bitter taste of winter this morning with heavy snow and very strong winds (shown). Up to ten inches of snow have fallen in the black hills. Thankfully the snow will stay out of Iowa and we are set for a cool spring day. One more chance of rain on Thursday before we finally dry out for a few days this weekend.

The last three Thursdays have been wild weather days with weather warnings issued each of those days. It has already been a week since the devasting tornadoes that impacted Iowa City last Thursday. This Thursday will be much nicer with only showers forecasted for Northern Iowa. In fact, the next week looks to be void of severe weather for the state.

Rainfall estimates for this month indicate that Eastern Iowa has picked up the heaviest rainfall. According to this analysis, an area southeast of Sioux City has really missed out on the rainfall this year only picking up 0.5 to an inch.
