Thanks to our recent turn back the clocks effort, we now enjoy an hour more of sunshine. A comparison of webcamera images clearly shows that it is much brighter at 7 AM today than it was on Saturday. Strangely, it seemed to get darker a bit earlier last night.

Rainfall estimates for October indicate that not much rain fell over most of Iowa. All of the areas in blue received less than a half inch of rain. Of course, not much is growing in October, but the rain is needed to recharge a topsoil drained of moisture during the growing season.

A dry ground, warm SW winds, and sunshine all helped to push temperatures into the 70s for all of Iowa and even 80s in Western Iowa. Thursday will be a tad bit cooler, but still well above normal. The return to normal occurs this weekend with a chance of rain as well.

The meager amount of rainfall this weekend will do very little to help the worsening drought situation in Iowa. Only a few tiers of counties in NW Iowa are currently not in some sort of drought monitor classification. With crops harvested, the major impact of this dryness is probably the increased threat of grass fires. This will be exacerbated by above normal temperatures and windy conditions this week with only limited chances of light rain.

The featured plot (click image for better view) shows a histogram of observed temperatures for this day of the year. There are a number of interesting things to note. High temperatures (red line) over 70 degrees somewhere in the state only occur once every 20 years or so. Low temperatures (blue line) around freezing are very common because many fall nights radiational cooling will allow temperatures to drop to freezing and begin frost deposition, which slows the cooling process. Also note how flat the high temperature (dotted line) frequency is. This is an indication of how variable our high temperatures can be in November.

Why spend your well deserved weekend raking leaves when mother nature provides a 40 knot wind to blow those leaves out of your yard? Winds will eventually die down later today setting the stage for a cool night. It won't take long for temperatures to return to above normal values on Friday.

At 00 UTC on 14 November (which is Sunday night), I will be increasing
the resolution of the various US NEXRAD composites to ~1 km.
Currently it is on the order of ~2 km. This change may break some
downstream GIS applications that do not request the geospatial extends
when they download the data. Otherwise, this change will not impact
most users.
The increased resolution is thanks to an equipment grant provided by
UNIDATA. This grant will also allow us to crank out other datasets
once all of the equipment is in place. The last hardware component
finally showed up this week. I am hoping this all will be done by late
November.

Yesterday's chilly weather did not stick around very long as southerly winds have returned this morning and temperatures will respond nicely today. Forecasted highs are in the 60s today and approaching 70 on Friday! Both values are well above our normal high around 50. Hard to beat this.

A report much like the "First Fall Freeze Probabilities" has been
added to the "climodat" page. This one details the chances that a
temperature below a certain threshold will be measured again that
spring. The report is called "Last Spring Freeze Probabilities".

The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather analyzed for Iowa on Saturday. A strong cold front will approach the state and should kick off some thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon. The main threat appears to be gusty winds. Temperatures will continue to be very warm with highs in the mid 60s.

On November 15th, the Iowa State Patrol will begin updating statewide
road conditions. This is ironically good timing with a major winter
storm on the way!
I have doublechecked the IEM provided road conditions page and
hopefully made sure everything is on the up and up. A prominent link
has been added to the "IEM Webring" at the top of all of our pages.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know. The dynamic mapping
app will get some new features very soon now.

Severe storms developed late Saturday afternoon in SW Iowa and raced to the northeast producing 9 tornados along the way. The wind will be extremely gusty and will blow whatever snow falls around making driving very difficult. Meanwhile, a severe weather outbreak is expected over the lower plains states.

Ah yes, it is November. A powerful storm system is moving away from Iowa this morning and our winds will finally begin to die down some. Snowfall totals were not very impressive, but the wind continues to blow the snow around making road plowing difficult. Temperatures will remain below freezing until this weekend when our next storm system arrives.

Ideal cooling conditions with a fresh blanket of snow allowed temperatures to drop into the single digits to near 0! It is certainly a wake up call to be getting this cold in November, but temperatures will recover nicely today and soar into 40s for the weekend.

The mercury in your thermometer probably did not move much yesterday as light winds and clouds limited daytime warming. Temperatures held above freezing around 40 degrees. Attention now turns to the forecast on Thursday. Currently wind looks to be the only issue with below normal temperatures.

Preliminary rainfall estimates for Sunday indicate most parts of the state receiving some precip. The particularly dry area Eastern Iowa currently classified in D3 status (bright red line) by the Drought Monitor missed out on the rainfall Sunday. The good news is that our forecast has numerous chances of precipitation, but those chances are in the form of snow.

A new redundant and scalable IEM webserver is now in production. I
have probably introduced some bugs, but things should be working for
the most part. Please let me know if you see any trouble...
Linux IP Virtual Server is used to provide redundancy and scalability.
The IEM now has two front end nodes (directors) and two real servers.
One of each could potentially crash and the entire system would
remain online (hopefully). The nice part is that adding webserving
capacity is as simple as plugging another machine into the cluster :)
This was the final step in the hardware upgrade graciously sponsored
by Unidata. With all of the components now in place, we can start
cranking out new and exciting datasets reliably to the community.
These datasets will start appearing very soon :)

IEM Freeze indicates that pavement temperatures (dots) have fallen below 32 degrees this morning with some light snow still falling in areas. This has created tricky driving weather over much of the state. Winter weather will contine for the rest of this week with snow chances just about every day.
